Triangulation of New York Times Article
In reading the New York Times article, one can see that at its most basic, this article is an opinionated editorial. In this article, the authors are trying to defend their stance of keeping the internet as a module of free expression because its roots are in a government that relies on that freedom. Three of the topics from the book Unspun are triangulated: political economy, governance, and ideology.
The core of this article is the current fight in international organizations like the UN to sever the Internet's ties with its country of origin, the United States. The authors point out that, yes, the United States has a monopoly of sorts regarding the Internet, mostly because of ICANN. ICANN is described by the authors as an organization that "administers and keeps track of all Web addresses worldwide." Because this organization was developed by the Department of Commerce, it has been requested that the organization should become worldwide, even though the Department has never been involved in a decision and therefore, it works apart from the American governmental system. However, ideologically, it is still ruled by American ideals like freedom. Freedom is feared by countries like China , whose main reason for wanting to govern their citizens' internet life is because they already have a hold on their real lives. Also, it is seen by the international community that the Internet is mainly another monopoly of the United States, an idea found in the concept of political economy.
